This is for the latest development release of mumble (1.2.3). Get it at: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
Most of the things covered here except the part on the overlay will work with the latest stable release (1.2.2)
Note: For anyone planning to use mumble on multiple computers or if you are going to re-install windows backup your certificate with the certificate wizard and transfer it to the new machine/install. See certificates.
Before you start it is always worth it to double check your microphone settings. Make sure that the microphone input volume is at 100% and Microphone Boost is on.
This is what the settings page for my HT Omega Claro looks like:
This is the main screen of mumble:
The first thing you will want to do is add Gabe's server.
Go to Server-->Connect then Add New with the info like below. Replace WOG with whatever you want your username to be.
When it asks for a password it is poop
It is worth it to go through the audio wizard again even if you have already done it, just to make sure certain settings are correct.
If you have not already created a certificate go to Configure-->Certificate wizard and make one.
After you have a certificate you will want to go through the audio wizard. It doesn't hurt to go through it a second or 3rd time if your microphone isn't working how you would like it to. I have taken a couple of screen shots of a few of the important pages.
On this page of the wizard make sure enable positional audio and attenuate applications are unchecked.
Echo cancellation is good for when other people are hearing feedback from your speakers.
For signal-to-noise and raw amplitude you will want to move the slider as far to the right as possible while still lighting up the mouth icon while talking as softly as you would in-game.
Raw amplitude is the setting that works the best for me.
If people are complaining about a lot of feedback coming from you consider enabling push-to-talk. You might as well set a key for it while you are here even if you never plan on using it.
Balanced is the best option, you can always tweak the bitrates later on.
You can mute people (if you have admin make sure it is local mute)
The person icon with a + sign next to peoples names means they are registered. Adding people as friends doesn't really do anything other than put a heart next to them.
You can register yourself with the server, but you will only be able to connect with the certificate+username combination you registered with. If you want to connect from another computer/windows install you will have to export the certificate and import it into the other install of mumble. You can do this through Configure-->certificate wizard.
If you find yourself locked out of a username ask someone with admin (Gabe) to un-register it for you. You can also change your username.
You can also set an avatar that will apear beside your name in the in-game overlay. If you are not registered you will have to set the avatar every time you join the server.
Priority speaker will attenuate everyone else when that person speaks.
The only important thing in here is the amplification setting under audio input and the overlay settings. Pretty much everything else is fine at its default values or needs minor tweaking
Got to Configure-->Settings
Make sure the Advanced box on the lower left is checked.
Under Audio Input the first thing you will want to change is Amplification under Audio Processing. Values between 1.00 and 1.75 usually work best. You can adjust this more if people complain about you being either too quiet or too loud.
You can also change between the different input methods or tweak pickup levels
Here you can change how loud the voice output is when you hear other users
Leave Positional Audio off (It can cause some lag issues for certain people/games)
Attenuate applications will turn down the volume off all other applications whenever someones mic is active.
You can assign a push-to-talk key here if you did not do it in the wizard.
Here you can set which messages/events the program will notify you of.
This is the in-game overlay.
You can save and load overlay settings. I have provided two configurations.
oldstyle is the classic mumble overlay look. A simple text list of names with tiny avatars to their left.
squareavatars is the new style which I have tweaked to make names readable underneath the avatars. It is a single column on the right side of the screen.
If you wanted to tweak some of the settings I have detailed some of the more confusing options/quirks
Zoom is just for editing, it will not change the size in-game
When Bounding box is enabled you can't resize any of the elements (I have no idea why)
The text below the avatar (Talking/silent/etc...) shows up as the users name in-game. It tends to be un-readable when overlaped with the avatar.
You can enable/disable certain parts of the display.
Note that the default avatar is using transparency and appears smaller than the actual dimensions of the image.
